She watches him unnoticed from outside the storefronts window.
Just basking in that moment when he’s completely unaware of her gaze and how much she wishes that they would remain friends even if in her heart she knows that she’s harboring a secret hope that someday they can be more than that.
He lifts his head and he notices her.
His eyes light up and his face brightens and without thinking, she felt her lips curl up in a mirroring smile.
He gives her a gentle wave and she felt her heart flutter a little.
“I may not love you”
She remembered his words from a long time ago.
She waited for the familiar twinge of pain in her chest that accompanies the memory but somehow in that instant, the words seemed to have lost its meaning.
There was just him and her and the here and now and as she takes a step to close the gap dividing them, she’s never felt closer to loving him and feeling loved by him and she wishes she can make herself believe that that glass window is the only obstacle that they’d have to cross before they can conquer the unspoken distance that is steadfastly keeping them close but which is also subtly driving them farther apart.
